Cable knit is king!

Despite having been scouring the spring/summer trends recently for lightweight, floaty fabrics and sleeveless dresses, I still can't curb my incessant adoration of the good old wardrobe staple that is the cable knit sweater! Spotting a young girl in jeans and wellies wearing one just yesterday triggered a slideshow of much more exciting high end fashion styling combinations in my mind!

Not only is the cable knit sweater a trusty wardrobe warrior worn through the seasons come rain or shine, it also looks great on both men and women and in my opinion epitomises our great British fashion heritage which I feel it is my duty to celebrate at least bi-anually being the pale English rose that I am!

To prove it's still a favourite - here's Rachel Bilson spotted in a little grey number recently which she's teamed with a good old pair of Red Label jeans!

The Aran knit can come in many different patterns and is steeped in history, tracing back - some say - as early as a 9th century depiction in the Book of Kells. The cable knit, in waterproof lanolin yarns, said to have been worn by fishermen to keep them dry, has a traditional interpretation. The cable being an integral part of the fisherman's daily life, is said to be a wish for safety and good luck when fishing. The diamond is a wish of success, wealth and treasure. The basket stitch represents the fisherman's basket, a hope for a plentiful catch! And you thought it was just an ordinary sweater!
